BANTAM FURY LOSE GOALTENDERS DUEL IN
ZONE 6 CHAMPIONSHIP

The Peterborough Lakers gained some revenge on the Jim Newton Electric Bantams in Zone 6 lacrosse action on Tuesday night, as they beat the Fury by a score of 2-1, to capture the Zone 6 D Championship.

After beating the Lakers the first three times they have played them this year, the Fury have now lost two straight to their arch rivals.

The game for the most part was dominated by the Fury, but they had a tough time hitting the net, and then when they did hit the net, the Laker goalie had an exceptional game, making save after save. At the other end of the floor, the Fury keeper, Josh O'Neill, also had a great game, coming up with a lot of key saves, keeping his team close, and giving them a chance to win.

The Lakers opened the scoring halfway through the 1st period, and from that point on, the goalies took over, and it became a game of save after save! If you are familiar with the game of lacrosse, you know that to have a game stay at 1-0 until the mid-point of the 3rd period, both teams are either struggling to score, or both goalies are on top of their games. In this case, it was a bit of both. With about 9 minutes to go in the 3rd period, Jacob Halsall finally solved the Laker goalie with a bounce shot in front of the net, which found the five hole on the tender, and knotted the score at 1-1.

But, with just over 3 minutes to play, the Lakers were on the power play, and they set the play up perfectly, and a great shot, with a great screen of goalie O'Neill, the Lakers bulged the twine, to give them a 2-1 lead. The Fury had a couple more scoring chances, and with 33 seconds left, Coach Hlibchuk called a time out to draw up one more play, but to no avail, as the shot missed the net and the Lakers gained control of the ball, and just ran out the clock.

The Fury have no time to think about this loss, as the next action for the boys is on the weekend, when they will participate in the Mimico Tournament, where they will be facing Brampton, Barrie, and Orangville. This tournament will be a good test for the team, as they prepare for the Ontario Lacrosse Association Provincial Tournament, to be held in Whitby during the weekend of July 31-August 2, 2009.
