MIDGET FURY ENDS 2010 SEASON AT PROVINCIALS

The 2010 lacrosse season for the Kawartha Lakes Fury Midget team, sponsored by Holsag Canada, came to an end on Saturday, August 7, as they posted a record of 2 losses and a tie in the round robin,of the Provincial championships, which was not enough to put them through to the next round, thus ending their season.

The team put up a valiant effort in all three games, and did not go down without a fight, but due to the seedings of the teams, set by the Ontario Lacrosse Association, the team found themselves in a pool with Shelbourne, Orangeville and Kitchener. In game 1, played on the Friday, the boys were pitted against the team from Kitchener, which according to the coaching staff, would be a team they should be able to be in the game with, and with hard work, come out victorious. Well, for the most part, the boys had to fight back, time after time, which they did, and even held the lead until late in the game, when the team from Kitchener, would tie the score, and the game would end in a 5-5 draw. Goal scorers for the Fury were Tom Weber with 2, and singles going to Michael Laidley, Riley Smith and Clint Harford. Picking up assists were, Brad Gerrow with 2, Devin Jordan and goaltender Patrick Stacey with singles.

The team's second game of the day, would be against an always tough Orangeville squad, who had also tied their first game of the tournament against Shelbourne, which meant a log jam at the top of the pool, with all 4 teams having gained only a single point in their first game. So, this game would be an important one for both squads. The game went back and forth from the opening face-off, with the first goal not being scored until the halfway point, when Orangeville drew first blood. By the end of the period, the Fury would tie it up, with a goal by Jeremy Lytle, assisted by goalie Josh O'Neill. The second period started, and the Orangeville team took it right to the Fury, scoring two quick goals and taking the lead 3-1. The game went back and forth for a bit, and then on a missed Fury shot, Orangeville scooped up the ball and headed the other way on a fast break, leaving the Fury defender, no choice but to haul down the Orangeville player. The official had no choice but to call a penalty shot against the he Fury, a call seldom seen in lacrosse.

This could be a real turning point in the contest, but as the Orangeville player moved in, O'Neill stood tall in the nets, and made the save, to keep the game close, and give the Fury a chance to get back in the game, and this is exactly what happened. The tide seem to turn in favour of the Fury for a bit after the save, and the Fury, on goals scored by Michael Laidley, unassisted, and Brad Gerrow, assisted by Jeremy Lytle, knotted the game at 3-3, and this is the way the 2nd period ended. The 3rd period started, and you could see the Orangeville team was not happy with the way they ended the 2nd period, and from the face off at center, you could see that things were going to turn for them. A couple of quick goals, and Orangeville is ahead, the Fury are changing goalies, and even this did not help. The final score of the game was 8-4 in favour of Orangeville, and this meant that a victory on Saturday, was now necessary, and help from other teams may be needed if the Fury were to advance. Scoring the fourth goal in this match for the Fury was Michael Laidley with his second, with the lone assist going to Tom Weber.

The game on Saturday would be against a tough Shelbourne Vets team. The Fury had faced them once before, in a tournament in Arthur, and were soundly beaten, by a score of 8-4. The score on the board, however, did not dictate the way the game was played, as Shelbourne, moved the ball around with ease, and physically outplayed the Fury. So, the team knew what they were up against, and came ready to compete to the best of their ability. Well, for the first half of the game, the Fury stuck to their game plan, and did a good job containing the much bigger Shelbourne squad, and at the end of the 1st period, the score was knotted at 1-1, with the Fury goal coming from Riley Smith, and assists to Clint Harford and Jacob Halsall. Goaltender Patrick Stacey did a good job trying to fend off the tough Shelbourne squad, but it was just a matter of time before they would wear down a smaller Fury squad, and take control of the floor. Again, a goaltender switch was made, but this time the move did not give the Fury the boost they needed, and the final score ended up 8-2 in favour of Shelbourne. Scoring the final goal of the season for the Fury, would be Michael Laidley, with assists going to Evan Connolly and Devin Jordan.

The team would like thank their team sponsor, Holsag Canada and individual player sponsors, Otto Weber Construction, P&R Maintenance for sponsoring the club and players during this lacrosse season. Last but not least, the players and the parents would like to extend a huge amount of gratitude to the coaching staff off the team, without these ladies and gentlemen, the running of the club would not have been possible. A big thanks to Head Coach Steve Millard, Assistant Coach Dave Conroy, Trainer Paul Jordan, and Manager Maxine Jordan.

MIDGET FURY WINS NEPEAN TOURNAMENT

The Kawartha Lakes Midget Fury Lacrosse team, sponsored by Holsag Canada, travelled to Ottawa from July 16 to 18, to participate in the tournament, hosted by the Nepean Knights.

Game 1 for the Fury, was on the Friday night, when they tangled with the Gloucester Dragons. The game started off well for the Fury, and before the half way point of the match, the Fury held a 4-1 lead. Then the wheels kind of fell off a bit, and the boys allowed the Dragons back into the game, and before they knew it, the game was knotted all up at 4 apiece. Halfway through the third period, the Fury were able to take advantage of a mistake by the opposition, and score the decisive goal, and were able to hang on to defeat Gloucester, by a score of 5-4.

Scoring for the Fury was Devin Jordan, Riley Smith, Tom Weber, Brad Gerrow and the winner was scored by William Lane. Assists went to Jeremy Lytle with 3 and Luke Tamlin, Jordan, and Weber, with one apiece.

The boys would have to get a good nights rest, as they were now slated to play three games on Saturday, to complete the round robin portion of the tournament.

The first game of the day for the Fury, would be against the home town team of Nepean. The Knights came out hard at the Fury from the opening draw, wanting to win in front of the home fans! For the most part, the game was a see-saw battle, with neither team taking advantage of their scoring chances, and when they did use the chances, both goalies came up with some game saving stops. The Fury goaltending tandem of Patrick Stacey and Josh O'Neill, as they did in the first game, held their team in the game, and when the final whistle blew, the game ended in a draw, with the final score being 2-2.

Scoring for the Fury in the second match was Riley Smith and Michael Laidley with one each, while Evan Connolly notched two assists.

The Holsag squads second match of the day, would be against team from Whitby. The team has faced this team on two other occaisions, and they have come away with a win and a loss, and this would shape up to be a nailbiter as well. The game from the start, was a very physical game, and neither team wanting to show the other, any sort of weakness. The day itself was very hot and muggy, which meant the inside of the arena was dreadfully hot, which in turn meant lots of water breaks for the goalies. Again, the goalies stood tall, with the Whitby goalie, and Fury goalie Patrick Stacey, not allowing many shots to bulge the twine.

As the game entered the halfway point of the third period, the score was all knotted up at 4 apiece, when a shot from just outside the top of the 24' line, by Brad Gerrow, glanced off a defenders stick, and up over the Whitby goalies shoulder, but the Fury ahead by a score of 5-4. For the next few minutes, Whitby pressured the Fury, but Stacey was equal to the task, and with less then a minute left, the Wildcats called a time out, to try and devise one final shot to tie the score. After the timeout, the Fury set up the defence, and were rewarded for their efforts, when Michael Laidley intercepted a pass, and went down the floor untouched, to put one in the empty cage. After the game, all Laidley could say was that, "I saw the open net, and all I could think about was missing it!"

Final score of this game was 6-4 in favour of the Fury. Scoring for the Fury in this game was Jeremy Lytle with 2, Devin Jordan, Riley Smith, Brad Gerrow and Michael Laidley. Assists went to Laidley and Tom Weber with 2 apiece, and singles to Gerrow and Lytle.

The last game of the day, and the last of the round robin, was against the Sudbury Rockhounds. The heat of the day was really starting to take affect on all the players, with lots of nagging cramps, dehydration, and all round lack of energy. This game was not as fast paced as some of the others, but each team again, had some great scoring chances, but some great work by the goaltenders, again kept this game close. The Sudbury tender, and Fury goalie Josh O'Neill made some great saves, and the game again ended in a 2-2 tie.

Scoring for the Fury was Michael Laidley and Evan Connolly, with assists going to Riley Smith, Luke Tamlin, Jeremy Lytle and Jacob Halsall, all with singles.

Having gone through the round robin, undefeated, the Fury knew that they would have a good chance at playing in the final on Sunday. The final decision may have to wait, however until after the final round robin game on Sunday morning. But, while waiting for the boys, word came into the arena, that at the other game in the same pool, the Gloucester Dragons, did the Fury a favour, and beat the team from Whitby, assuring the boys of a spot in the final on Sunday afternoon.

Well, this would be the Fury's 6th game in four days, and with the sweltering heat, and nagging bruises, it would be a true test of the grit of the team. They would be facing the Nepean team who they tied 2-2 in the round robin, in front of their home fans, and a Nepean team who had a pretty easy schedule, playing once on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and got to sleep in their own beds for the past two nights. With all this pushing the Fury, one would have to say that Nepean had the edge going into the championship game. Well, for the first half of the game, it was the exact opposite. The Fury came out with a bang, and before the half way point of the game, had built up a 4-1 lead. Fury goalie Patrick Stacey, held the Nepean squad at bay, and it looked as if the way the Fury were playing, they were on their way to claiming the championship. But wait, no lead is ever safe in lacrosse, and the Nepean squad after the break of the second period, started the third, on the power play, and made the Fury pay! After just 2 minutes into the 3rd period, Nepean scored 2 quick goals, and made this a barn burner. With the score now 4-3, the Fury goaltender went to the bench for some water, and due to some cramping and an upset stomach from the heat, the Fury were forced to make a goaltending change, and Josh O'Neill took to the net. Not wanting to lose this now for the Fury, and for the great game that Stacey had played in the nets, O'Neill, after a couple of scary shots, took control, and was able to keep the Nepean shooters at bay, and a late goal by Michael Laidley, assured the Fury of the victory, and the championship.

Final score of the game was 5-3 in favour of the Fury.

Scoring for the Fury was Michael Laidley with 2, Clint Harford, Brad Gerrow, and Jeremy Lytle with singles. Assists went to Devin Jordan with 2, and singles to Harford, Weber and Tamlin.

MIDGET FURY UPDATE- 1 WIN - 1 LOSS

The Midget Fury rep squad played a couple more games last week in Zone 6 play, and game away sporting a 1 and 1 record.

On July 5, in Little Britain, the boys hosted the Toronto Stars. In two previous games, the Fury have had a particularly easy time with the Stars, and this night was no different. While the first period was a bit slow to get started offensively for the Fury, the lads quickly turned that around, and put it to the Stars, handing them a pounding, by a score of 10-1. In three games against the Stars this year, the Fury have outscored their opponent by a score of 30 to 3. Scoring for the Fury were Evan Connolly, Devin Jordan, Jeremy Lytle, and Clint Harford with 2 each, and singles to Brad Gerrow and Riley Smith. Assists went to Tom Weber with 4, Lytle with 3, Harford and Jordan with 2, and Gerrow and Micheal Laidley with singles.

The squad practiced on Wednesday night, to prepare for a tough contest the next night, July 8, when they would travel down to the Iroquois Arena in Whitby, to take on the Whitby. Having beat the Whitby squad at home a couple of weeks earlier, maybe there was a hint of over confidence, as the boys were not really in the game, and ended up on the losing end of a 5-1 decision. Scoring for the Fury was Riley Smith, with the lone helper going to Luke Tamlin.

Next up for the Fury, was a game on July 12, in Little Britain, against their archrivals from down highway 7, the Peterborough Lakers. Having been dealt their first loss of the Zone by the Lakers, the Fury were determined for some revenge. While the scoring details, were not available at press time, the Fury did come away with a hard faught 4-3 victory, in a penalty filled, chippy contest, that saw 2-3 players for each team in the penalty box most of the game.

MIDGET FURY UPDATE- 2 WINS, 1 LOSS

The Kawartha Lakes Fury Midgets, sponsored by Holsag Canada had 3 more games in Zone 6 play over the past couple of weeks, and at the end of those 3 games, they came away with 2 wins, and a loss.

In their first game, the Fury travelled down the 401, to Scarborough, to take on the host Toronto Stars. In their first meeting of the season, the Fury were not welcoming hosts, as they controlled the game and came away with a fairly easy 8-2 victory. Knowing that they would be expecting a much tougher game tonight, they Fury knew that they would need to come out fast and furious, and take it to the Stars early. Well, for once, the Fury came out, and played the type of game they are capable of, and were rewarded for their quick effort and came away with an easy 14-0 victory. Scoring for the Fury were Riley Smith with 3 goals, Brad Gerrow, Michael Laidley, Devin Jordan and Will Lane with 2 each, with singles going to Iain Cooper, Sam McGregor and Evan Connolly. Assists went to Jeremy Lytle and Michael Laidley with 3 each, Tom Weber, Devin Jordan and Sam McGregor with 2 each, and singles to Riley Smith, Brad Gerrow, Clint Harford and goaltender Patrick Stacey. The shutout was shared by goalkeepers Patrick Stacey and Joshua O'Neill.

The next game for the squad was to be played in Little Britain, against the team from Whitby, but due to a freak storm that blew through the area, knocked out the power, and the game had to be moved to the Lindsay Recreation Complex. Well, the last minute adjustment did not seem to affect either team, as they put on an entertaining show for the fans in attendance, and in the end, the Fury came away with a hard-fought 6-2 victory. The Fury again started the game quickly, and again it paid early dividends, as the boys jumped out to an early lead, and did not look back. At the end of the first period, the Whitby squad changed goalies, and that seem to bring some life to the visitors, and the game went back and forth, and only strong goaltending from the tandem of Stacey and O'Neill, allowed the Fury to stay in the lead, and come away with the victory. Scoring for the Fury on this night were Tom Weber with 2, and singles going to Riley Smith, Clint Harford, Jeremy Lytle and Will Lane. Picking up assists were Jeremy Lytle with 2, and Tom Weber and Michael Laidley.

In their last game of week on June 30th, the Fury again made the trip down the 401 to Bowmanville, to play against one of their archrivals, the Clarington Gaels. In their first match up of the year, the Gaels travelled to Lindsay, and the Fury sent them home on the end of a 6-2 loss. Knowing that they always have a hard time playing in Clarington, the Fury knew that this game would be much different from the first. They could not have been correct! The Fury controlled the flow of the game for the most part, and were frustrated more and more by the Clarington goalie, who made save after save, and stood on his head to give Clarington a 2-1 victory. With such a low scoring game, it was evident that the goalies were the ones in charge, and both Patrick Stacey, and Josh O'Neill did their part as well for the Fury, but they came away on the losing end. Scoring the lone marker for the Fury was Devin Jordan.

The Fury have a couple of more games upcoming, when they will host the Toronto Stars, and then travel to Whitby. Details of these games will follow.

MIDGET FURY - ARTHUR TOURNY DISAPPOINTMENT

The Fury Midget squad hit the road on Saturday, June 19, 2010 for the Town of Arthur, to participate in a tournament, sponsored by the Arthur Aces.

The team's first game was against the team from Fort Erie. This turned out to be not much of a game at all, more so, just a scrimmage, if you want to call it that. There were obviously some communication problems, according to a source from Fort Erie, and the team was only told about participating in the tournament a few days before, and only 5 players and a goalie made the trip. Kudos do go out to the squad, as they pretty much played a very defensive minded game only, and with some stellar goaltending from a very good young lady, were only defeated by the Fury squad, by a score of 7-0. Scoring for the Fury were Jeremy Lytle with 2 goals and 2 assists, Devin Jordan with 2 goals, Micheal Laidley with 1 goal and 3 assists, Riley Smith with 1 goal and 1 helper, and Evan Connolly notching a single. Single assists went to Tom Weber, Will Lane, Luke Tamlin, Adam Rowe and Iain Cooper. Even though they were not tested with many shots, the goalie tandem of Patrick Stacey and Josh O'Neill, recorded the shut out.

The second game of the day was a do or go home game. The opponents would be the the Shelburne Vets, and after watching them play earlier in the day, the competition would be a whole lot tougher and better. The Shelburne team was big, strong, and moved the ball with virtual ease around the floor, as the Fury fell behind very quickly in the game, and by the 3 minute mark, found themselves down by a score of 3-0. The earlier game, was obviously coming back to haunt them, as from the goalie, all the way out, the team looked a step behind the Vets. By the time the Fury settled down, it was to late, and the final score of the game was 8-3 in favour of Shelburne. This loss eliminated the Fury from further tournament play, and meant an early drive home. Scoring for the Fury in the second game were Devin Jordan and Tom Weber, each with 1 goal and 1 assist, and the last tally going to Brad Gerrow, drawing the single assist, was Evan Connolly.

Next action for the Holsag team is on Thursday night, when they make the trek down the 401 to Scarborough, to play the Scarborough Stars..

MIDGET FURY BOX TEAM OFF AND RUNNING

With the house league season winding down, the Kawartha Lakes Fury midget rep club, sponsored by Holsag Canada, are starting to get geared up for rep play in Zone 6, along with participating in the Provincial Championships in Whitby, from August 6-8, 2010. With the players committed to participate in house league play, the rep season has slowly started, with the boys having played just 3 zone games, as well as participating in a tournament in Cornwall, over the weekend of June 4-6, 2010.

The team's first Zone game, actually took place back in mid-May here in Lindsay, and the boys came away with a victory over the Toronto Stars, defeating them by a score of 8 to 2. Scoring for the Fury was William Lane with 2 goals, Tom Weber with a goal and an assist, Jacob Halsall with a goal and an assist, Micheal Laidley with a goal and an assist, Jeremy Lytle, Luke Tamlin, Evan Connolly , all with single goals, and single assists to Iain Cooper, and goaltender Josh O'Neill.

In their second game in the same week, there opponent would be the Clarington 2 team, and again, the Fury came away with a 6-2 victory. Scoring for the Fury was Jeremy Lytle with 3 goals and an assist, Iain Cooper with a goal and 2 assists, Jacob Halsall with a goal and an assist, the last goal was scored by Micheal Laidley. Assists went to Brad Gerrow, Evan Connolly and Tom Weber, with 2 each.

The weekend of June 4-6, the team made the 4 hour trek to Cornwall, to participate in their first tournament of the season. The preliminary OLA rating for the Fury, has the boys rated as a "D" classification. The tournament they would be playing in, was a "C" tournament, so this would be a good chance for the team to see where they stack up against larger centres. The schedule of games, would see the Fury play games against to "C" teams, Kingston and Brockville, and a "B" team from Kahnawake.

The boys saw their first action on Friday night against the squad from Kingston, and after a slow start, they picked up the pace, and came away with a convincing 5-2 victory. Scoring for the Fury were Micheal Laidley with two, Jeremy Lytle, Riley Smith and Will Lane with singles, and assists going to Riley Smith and goalie Josh O'Neill with 2 apiece.

Their second game would be Saturday morning against a tough Kahnawake team. From the time the Fury hit the floor, they knew they would be in tough, against a much more stronger and physical club. Probably the best team they have faced in the past couple of years, the Kahnawake squad moved the ball with virtual ease at the start of the game, but the Fury held on with some good goaltending from Josh O'Neill and Patrick Stacey, and the boys calmed down a bit, and found that they could play with this team, if they played harder and smarter. In the end, the final score was 8-4 in favour of Kahnawake. Scoring for the Fury in the game were Riley Smith with a pair, while single tallies went to Luke Tamlin and Tom Weber. Assists went to Brad Gerrow with two, and singles to Micheal Laidley and Jeremy Lytle.

This set up a match on Saturday afternoon against the Brockville Braves. This game was a see saw affair, with the game going back and fourth for the first half, then the Fury building a two goal lead, only to see the Brockville team tie up the game with just over a minute go. Scoring for the Fury were Jeremy Lytle with four goals, and Brad Gerrow and Micheal Laidley with singles. Assists went to Evan Connolly and Tom Weber, with two apiece, and singles to Micheal Laidley and Luke Tamlin.

With no overtime in the prelimnary round, the Fury record would be a win, a loss and a tie, good enough for second place, and setting up a rematch with the Brockville team on Sunday morning. Well, it was obvious from the start of the game, that the Fury boys stayed up way too late the night before, as they seemed to be a step behind the Braves all game, and came away with a disappointing loss by a score of 5-3, eliminating them from further play. Scoring for the Fury in their last game were, Tom Weber, Micheal Laidley and Will Lane, and assists going to Jeremy Lytle and Evan Connolly.

With the tournament behind them, the boys again took to the floor for a Zone 6 game, making the trip down highway 7, to face their arch rivals, the Peterborough Lakers. Again, the Fury seemed to maybe take the smaller Laker team for granted, and some very sloppy defensive play, cost them a loss at the hands of the Lakers, by a score of 6-3. Scoring for the Fury were Luke Tamlin, Riley Smith and Will Lane, and assists going to Jeremy Lytle with two and Evan Connolly with a single.

Next action for the Fury squad is June 19, when the squad will travel to Arthur, for tournament play.a
