BANTAM FURY ROUGH UP THE ENFORCERS

On Wednesday June 10, the Jim Newton Electric Bantam Fury rep squad traveled down Highway 12 and 47, to take on the Enforcers in Uxbridge. Having already beaten the Enforcers in their first game of the year, by a score of 7-4, the Fury knew that they would be in tough, with Uxbridge wanting to even the season series.

The game started off at a very quick place, with both teams firing a flurry of shots at each others goalie. Both goalies seemed determined to hold their team in the game, and not wanting to allow the 1st goal of the game. But with just 4:38 to go in the 1st period, the flood gates opened in favour of the Fury. Craig Shier picked up a loose ball, and with his blazing speed, pulled away from the defender, and went in all alone on the Uxbridge goalie, and beat him with a low shot, giving the Fury the 1-0 lead. Just a little over 3 minutes later, Liam Newton was left alone at the top of the circle, something you do not want to do, as this youngster has one of the hardest and most accurate shots for a player of his stature, and he wired the shot right over the goalies right shoulder, giving the Fury a 2-0 lead. The Fury were not done there however! With just 8 seconds to go in the 1st, Craig Shier again picked up a loose ball, but this time was joined by Brenden Hlibchuk on a 2-1, and a great pass from Shier to Hlibchuk, amounted to a another Fury goal, giving them a 3-0 lead at the end of one frame.

The 2nd period was all about goaltending. Both goalies put on a clinic for their teammates and the fans in attendance at the game. Even though there were not a lot of shots, the shots taken were of good quality, good scoring chances. However, both goalies were up to the task and made some great saves. As everyone knows, in lacrosse, a 3-0 lead is not really a safe one, so the Fury were determined to widen the gap. With just 2:41 seconds to go in the 2nd, the Fury increased their lead to 4, with an unassisted goal by Riley Smith. So, at the end of 2 periods, things were looking good for the boys from the City of Kawartha Lakes.

Just over a minute into the 3rd, the Uxbridge squad narrowed the gap to just 3 goals, as the Fury had a defensive breakdown, and the Enforcers finally put one past Josh O'Neill, the Fury goalie. From that point on, the Fury pretty much controlled the play, and they sealed the deal with an unassisted goal by Hayden Ryan, with just over 3 minutes to play.

The final score was 5-1 in favour of the Fury. With the victory, the boys record now improves to 4 wins and a loss in Zone 6 play.

The boys are off to Kingston for the weekend to compete in a tournament, which will see them play 4 games over 2 days.

Their next home game is next Tuesday night, June 16th, 2009 at 8:00pm, when they will battle with the always tough Peterborough Lakers.
